BIOGRAPHY Thom Evans, born April 2, 1985 in Harare, Zimbabwe, is a former Scottish international rugby union player. His rugby career ended at aged 24 when he incurred a serious neck injury.
Evans was educated at Wellington College, Berkshire. He earned his first cap for the Scottish rugby union side in June 2008 vs Argentina. He was selected in the Six Nations 30 man squad for the 2008 Six Nations. Sadly, in the Six Nations game against Wales in February 2010, things took a dramatic turn when Evans suffered a severe neck injury after colliding with Welsh player Lee Byrne. He was stretchered off the pitch and taken to hospital to receive treatment. He underwent a neck operation that evening, and it was revealed that his cervical vertebrae had been knocked so badly out of alignment that he was literally a millimetre from paralysis or death. After four months of rehabilitation, Evans was forced to retire on 1 July 2010, after accepting medical advice.
A very determined and ambitious athlete, the accident did not stop him for pursuing other passions, in a touching interview with "Touchline" magazine, Evans outlined his intentions to return to the sprinting circuit, in hope of other athletic success. View GALLERY:
