GOSSIP! Prince
William
"I won't be King -- and neither you nor anybody else can make me!" the defiant 17-year-old told his devastated dad. What's more, the young heir to the throne stunned the entire royal family by declaring that the monarchy should be completely abolished. "Wills can be a headstrong boy. And if it was anybody else, Charles and the Queen could dismiss his attitude as just teenage rebellion," said a royal source. "But even before his mother was killed, Wills was adamant he would never be King. After she died he became even more stubborn. "It's no passing whim -- and the royals are finally taking it seriously. "Ironically, it was Princess Diana who fanned the flames of her son's rebellion before her tragic death. "Di and Wills were watching a TV debate on the future of the monarchy and viewers were asked to participate in a phone poll on whether to abolish it," said the royal insider.
"But she could never hide her hatred of the royal system from Wills." A Buckingham Palace insider added: "Charles has had some pretty heated rows with William about accepting his royal duty. But William refuses to change his mind. "Their biggest fight came about a month ago just before their annual ski trip to Switzerland. FAST FACT! If Prince William takes the crown, he'd be known as King William V. "While planning the trip, Wills complained about bringing so many bodyguards. Charles replied that it was just a fact of life that he'd have to get used to. "William told his father: 'I won't ever get used to living with people watching my every move and treating me like some museum piece. That's why I don't have the same aspirations as you.' "Charles told him, 'They're not aspirations so much as our destiny. I think you'll understand that eventually.' " That's when William exploded, said the palace insider.
When Wills finished his outburst, Charles was stunned into silence. Speechless, he grabbed his son, hugged him -- and wept. "You don't understand what you're saying," Charles finally said. "You don't understand how much it hurts to hear you say those things." Upset over moving his father to tears, William hugged Charles. But he refused to take back his shocking words. "Charles has decided to give William as much freedom as possible," said the insider. "William is the first king-to-be who's refused to have his future mapped out. "He doesn't want to take on any royal duties 'because he doesn't feel ready yet' -- and doesn't sit in on meetings with his father. "He refuses to get lessons in constitutional history and law like all his forebears. "He's not been heaped with honorary positions or been made commander-in-chief of any army regiments. "Charles is just praying that he can change William's mind around in time."
