HOT ALERT: Tobey Maguire

With the right balance of sweet shyness as Peter Parker and confidence under the mask, Tobey Maguire makes a darn good swing kid for the full-force arrival of the special effects-filled, live-action update of the comic world's favorite athletic arachnid.

This webbed feat sticks to its roots well--showing the beginning of the bugged-out superhero, his non-love life with Mary Jane (Kirsten Dunst) and battle with first big baddie, the Green Goblin (a wonderfully cackling Willem Dafoe). Luckily, little crawls here.

Spidey's CGI hang time is amazing, and the story's perfectly paced for summer popcorn munchers. Sure, if you're a hard-core comic-book geek, there are plenty of points to argue. But get over it--this one's worth sticking around for.

Question: This movie is different for you. What made you want to do it?

Tobey: I'm excited to be a part of a big event movie. I was interested in working with Sam (Raimi, his director). I thought he was the perfect choice. He's great to be around. He's very encouraging as far as me contributing my ideas and being a creative partner in the process of making a film. Though he's my guide and he's overseeing the whole thing, I'm pretty much in charge of my character and my character's journey and how I relate to other people. Spiderman is really interesting with complicated relationships and a tough journey.

Based on the legendary flagship character of Marvel comics, this is the story of Peter Parker, a student living with his Aunt May and Uncle Ben after the death of his parents when he was very young. He's an avid student with a much-less-than-stellar social life and a knack for bad luck. When a freak accident miraculously grants him incredible spider-like abilities, in effect, it makes him into the amazing Spider-Man. Peter will find that there's a thin line between an ordinary man and an extraordinary hero; and he'll have to be the one to cross it.
