Sambag's Mailbox: In Responce to Daniel's "Can an OPEN gay guy really find happiness?"

Dear Sambag,

This is kinda more a response to Daniel...something that may help...or may not! But at least there is a chance :)

I am 18 and only just come out. It took me so long to come out because I, too, was so scared of what might happen; that the friends I had would treat me ill because of it. Being closeted actually led me to depression, something that I spent a while getting over and I am sure if I was open from the moment I knew (pretty much all my life) I would have been SO much better off from it.

I still haven't found anyone who is right for me - I am really rather picky I am afraid :P - but at least now I have a chance. My friends are ever so much closer than they ever were now, even straight guy friends, who I was worried would treat me as an outcast. It took very little time to get to a stage where we could joke about it freely and talk about it...they have even arranged to go to a gay bar with me!

If I was still closeted, however, no such things could/would be going on for me and I wouldn't be me. For 18 years I haven't been me, but now I am and I have no regrets and I really think that you should get yourself into a position where you can tell someone, even if it is just one person (for me I told three people while very drunk and ended up confessing an undying love for this guy, who is straight...and even now he is one of my best friends). But don't force yourself into it and let it be you who comes out. It also helps to prove to you who your real friends are, and that is truly worthwhile.

I hope you choose to do what you think is right, whatever that might be. Gay people are accepted so much more than they were, and indeed it is practically normal. So long as you don't flaunt it you will avoid all the hate you see going round and if anything you will be respected for not doing so...
