TV Show: America (2005)

Before Brokeback Mountain there was... "América". Two gay cowboys (Bruno Gagliasso and Erom Cordeiro) falling in love with each other, in spite of conservative mother, jealous girlfriend and society. Originally aired in Brazil in 2005, by TV Globo, the telenovela focused on illegal immigrants in the United States. It became one of the first long-running Brazilian telenovelas to have a storyline between two gay characters including a scene in which they share a kiss. The kissing scene was scheduled to be aired in the final episode, which created much anticipation from the gay community in Brazil. Although already filmed, Globo, the parent company, elected not to run the kissing scene, much to the surprise of the writers, fans and actors involved. The event led to a number of protests for equal rights, condemning Globo for the attitude.

Movie: Shelter

Forced to give up his dreams of art school, Zach (Wright) spends his days working a dead-end job and helping his needy sister care for her son. In his free time he surfs, draws and hangs out with his best friend, Gabe, who lives on the wealthy side of town. When Gabe's older brother, Shaun (Rowe), returns home, he is drawn to Zach's selflessness and talent. Zach falls in love with Shaun while struggling to reconcile his own desires with the needs of his family.

"Shelter" is the most celebrated gay film this film festival season. It is being heralded by critics everywhere as the next landmark film in gay cinema. It was first released March 2008, and is currently being shown in select theatres in the United States (see listings).

On Display Men Model: Jeff

Jeff grew up in New Hampshire and has since relocated to New York. One of Jeff’s most endearing qualities – and he has many – is the way he greets you with a smile. “I’m very outgoing,” he tells me, “and I like to make people feel comfortable.” His relaxed manner and upbeat personality definitely would tend to put one at ease.

This model and athlete has played a variety of sports including football, baseball and even gymnastics, but at this point he’s more interested in his training. “Some of my life goals are to continue modeling and training, but I’d also like to eventually own a gym. I was lucky enough to always know what I wanted to do with my career.”
