Random Model: Aaron Hilliard

Sambag's Mailbox: A Girl Falling for a Gay Guy

Dear Sambag,

At the beginning of the school year there was this new guy at our school. I looked at him and thought: "Wow he is so arrogant, I will probably never speak to him." I was wrong. We became really close friends and started telling each other everything. The more I got to know him, the more I started liking him. He became the most important person in my life, the person I would stand up for, the person that's there for me, the person that makes everything worth fighting for, my rock, my paradigm shift in so many ways. I noticed that I fell in love with him. I know I'm only 18 but it's so much more than a crush. He gives me feelings I have never felt for anyone ever. He makes me wonder about things I didn't know existed.

Yesterday, he told me that he was gay. We were lying in my bed after just talking for hours and my heart was broken. He told me that he didn't wanna be gay because he just wanted to be normal but with every word my heart cracked more open. I was never that hurt in my life. I'm in love with an amazing person and he will never know because I am his best friend and because he is gay. It breaks my heart. It hurts so much and I can't do anything about it.

Any advice?

Awww, that's sad. I'm sure it's just as difficult for him to tell you he's gay, as it is for you to hear it.

It hurts when you have your heart broken, it hurts a lot. The truth is that he is gay and he will never be attracted to you in "that" way. My best advice would be to do your hardest and absolute best to move on. You've fallen for him big time, and it's going to hurt but would you rather sit around and hope he changes, or find a nice guy who is straight and will reciprocate your feelings? You're wasting time in being in love with your gay friend. He obviously loves you to pieces, but as a friend, because if he didn't he wouldn't have told you all the things he has. He most likely sees you as his rock because telling someone you're gay is a hard thing to do. So you should be proud of yourself that you've been such a good friend to him (and still are!).

At the end of the day, you've still got this friend. He will always be your friend because you have a really close connection. With time, you'll realise you ARE just friends; and when you've got a partner, and he has a partner, you'll probably laugh about the way you felt about him. When you have a new boyfriend who loves you the way you love him, it will take the pain away of finding out your crush is gay.

Maybe you should tell him how you feel? But be prepared to be knocked back. If you talk to him about this though, you might get some comfort out of knowing everything that was kept inside has been released. Talking and getting things in the air will really help you to get over him. But I honestly think focusing your attention on someone else (even if you're not that mad about them!) will help you move on from your gay crush.
