Sambag's Mailbox: "How Do I Get Over Him?"

Dear Sambag,

I like this guy in my school for two years now. Because he is a guy, I can't approach him like a straight guy would be able to approach a girl he likes. We were friends in the beginning of last year. When we came back for second year it all went wrong. He found out about my little crush to him. We used to greet when we see each other but now it’s gotten awkward and every time I try to talk to him it just becomes as brief as the intention that lingers around me which is to be his bf is always present. I don’t know how to talk to him about my issue and it’s been unbearable for me for the past few months. I can't sleep lost appetite on food massively and it has affected both my social life and education. I am finding it really hard to concentrate. I’ve tried to find my self a new hobby but it doesn’t seem to work. Wherever I go whatever I do, he is always on my mind. Sometimes I even think that he is the only thing in my mind.

He has no idea of what I am feeling. All I know with confidence for now is that he knows that I have feelings for him. I never actually told him straight to his face as I have no courage though. And this just makes matters worse. I am aware that he doesn’t share the same feelings for me for the most obvious reason that he is straight as he told me he had a gf. But there are times that I feel that I may have a chance with him. Every now and then he would smile at me and act friendly to me but this could be just a distortion of the real situation. This could be just false hope that my mind is creating.

I don’t know how to move on and I am finding it difficult everyday to even go to school. So my question is... do I just go talk to him and let it all out? There are a lot of consequences for this action and I have listed them down. For one is that we still have 6months in school, if I talk to him about this and it’s a no, I know it would be more painful for me coz that means I have to still see him everyday in school and suffer the social stigma against homosexuals. I know that not everyone in my school is comfortable with people like me including his friends. Plus it hurts even more because he is the first individual that got me this good. I’ve had lots of crushes before and none of them is as extreme as this one.

Do you think telling him would rid me off this depression? I’m hurt to have the thought in my head that I can never be with him, would I get even more hurt if I tell him and get an answer of a no? Time heals people say, but it’s been almost two years and it gets worse everyday for me. During Christmas I was opening my presents and all I could think about is him. When I go parties I can’t enjoy it. It’s really awful.

Please help me, I can’t go any longer…

Dear Roman,

You can not obsess over him. You need to realize that you and he are never going to be. People deal with these situations differently. If what you say is accurate, I wouldn't recommend talking to him. There are just some guys who are not comfortable with homosexuality; he's also probably worried he'll get teased by his male friends when he's near you. I would recommend avoiding him as much as you can; don't look at him at all; pretend he does not exist; or better yet, change school.

Talk with someone you trust. They will be the ones to pull you out of this situation. You have a long life ahead of you. This isn't the end of the world. You just have to learn to move on. There will be another boy and eventually the pain from this breakup will be gone. As long as you don’t let this painful experience ruin your ability to show love, you’ll only be that much better the next time around. You’ll love and appreciate the next on even more. Unfortunately, hurt is a part of life.

Movie: Prayers for Bobby

Scenes from "Prayers for Bobby", the true story of Mary Griffith, gay rights crusader, whose teenage son committed suicide. Very painful and personal, this is the story of a mother's struggle to reconcile the tension between her deeply held religious beliefs and the suicide of her gay son. Mary Griffith prayed that her gay son Bobby would be "healed" and pressured him to try to "change." But after his suicide, she reexamined her theology and beliefs about homosexuality and was herself radically transformed.
